The Mirror Now…The Song About Seeing Your Mother in Your Own Reflection And Finally Understanding.

This is the hardest song I've ever written.

Not because the words were difficult to find. They came easily, once I let them. It's hard because it's true. Because it's about my mother, and about the woman I thought she was, and about the woman I now know she was trying to be.

This is the song about forgiveness. Not the easy kind. The kind that takes years. The kind that comes when you finally understand that the people who hurt you were hurting too.

The Hard Years

When I was young, my mother was hard on me.

Not in the way that builds character. In the way that leaves marks. She made sure I always felt small. She withheld approval like it was currency I hadn't earned. I knew, even before I had words for it, that I wasn't her favorite. That there was something about me that disappointed her. That no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't reach the version of me she wanted me to be.

For the longest time, I thought she hated me.

I thought there was something fundamentally wrong with me. That if I could just be better, quieter, more like the daughter she wanted, she would finally look at me with warmth instead of that sharp, assessing gaze. I wanted her approval so badly it ached. I would have done anything to hear her say she was proud of me.

She never did.

Not then, anyway.

The Reflection

It took me years to understand what was happening between us. To see beyond her hardness to what was underneath.

She saw herself in me. And that terrified her.

The same stubbornness. The same intensity. The same hunger for more than the world was offering. She looked at me and saw the girl she'd been—the girl who'd been hurt, who'd had to fight, who'd learned early that the world doesn't make space for softness. And she was afraid. Afraid of what that girl would have to face. Afraid of how much it would cost her to be herself in a world that wanted her to be small.

So she tried to prepare me. The only way she knew how.

She was building armor on me. Thick skin. Walls. The tools she'd used to survive her own life. She wasn't trying to break me. She was trying to make me strong enough to survive a world that had already tried to break her.

I didn't understand that then. I was too young, too hurt, too hungry for the softness she couldn't give me. But I understand it now.

The Woman in the Mirror

My mother is older now. Her roar isn't as loud. Her memory is starting to fade. The sharp edges I remember have softened, worn down by time and grief and the slow work of being human.

And I? I look in the mirror, and I see her looking back.

The same jawline. The same hands. The same stubborn set of my shoulders. The same fire that scared her when she saw it in me. I see her when I'm angry, when I'm fighting for something I believe in, when I refuse to back down. I see her when I'm hurting and I can't find the words to ask for help. I see her when I look at the woman I've become and wonder where I got the strength to survive.

She gave me that. She gave me all of it.

The hardness that hurt me? It's the same hardness that kept me alive when I needed to survive. The criticism that made me feel small? It's the same voice that taught me to see my own flaws clearly enough to grow. The mother who couldn't give me softness? She gave me steel instead. And steel lasts longer.

The Forgiveness

I'm not angry anymore.

It took a long time to get here. Years of untangling her pain from mine. Years of learning that her inability to love me the way I needed wasn't my fault. Years of understanding that she did love me—she just didn't know how to show it in ways I could feel.

I've forgiven her. Not because she asked for it. Not because she changed. But because holding onto the anger was hurting me more than it ever hurt her. Because I looked in the mirror one day and realized that the woman I saw was beautiful, and strong, and scarred, and hers. And I didn't want to carry the weight of that old pain anymore.

She made me strong. She taught me how to survive. She gave me the tools I needed to face a world that wouldn't be gentle with me.

And in the end, that was her gift. Not the softness I craved. But the strength I needed.

For the Ones Who Are Still Hurting

If you're reading this and you have a mother who hurt you—who was too hard, too cold, too absent, too much—I want you to know something.

You don't have to forgive her. Not yet. Not ever, if you're not ready.

Forgiveness isn't something you owe anyone. It's something you give yourself when you're tired of carrying the weight. And if you're not there yet, that's okay. You're allowed to be angry. You're allowed to grieve the mother you needed and didn't get. You're allowed to hold her accountable for the ways she failed you.

But I want you to know that the pain you carry? It doesn't have to be permanent. And the woman you're becoming? She's not just a product of what you lacked. She's also a product of what you survived.

And someday, maybe, you'll look in the mirror and see her—not as the wound she left, but as the strength you built in its place.

That's what I see now. That's what "The Mirror Now" is about.

Lyrics:

I remember the sting of a careless word
The quietest prayer, going unheard
Measuring myself by your cold, sharp glance
Thinking I never stood a chance
I built up walls, I learned to hide
With a hollow, aching space inside
Convinced the fault was mine to own
A seed of love you never sowed.

But time has a way of softening the view
And shedding a light on what was true
I was a reflection you were afraid to see
A younger version of the pain in you
And all the hardness that you sent my way
Was the very stone on which I learned to stand today.

The world is harsh, you knew it well
You had your own untold, hard shell
You weren't raising a child to be soft and sweet
But a warrior, ready for defeat
You taught me how to take the blow
A strength you never thought you'd know
You were building armor, skin so tough
Because you knew the world would be rough.

And time has a way of softening the view
And shedding a light on what was true
I was a reflection you were afraid to see
A younger version of the pain in you
And all the hardness that you sent my way
Was the very stone on which I learned to stand today.

Now your roar is a whisper, your memories fade
A different kind of price is being paid
And as I hold your hand, I feel no spite
Just the turning of the dark into the light
The lessons learned, the debt is paid
In the peacefulness we've finally made.

And when I look in the mirror, it's your eyes I see
The resilience, the fire, the history
The strength you forged, the will you gave
Rising from the love I thought I craved.
I see you in me.
Yeah, I see you in me.
And I finally understand.

Thank you, Mom.
